A colonoscopy is a simple and effective tool that can help detect colon cancer, polyps, and other abnormalities. During a colonoscopy, your doctor can diagnose conditions, take biopsies, and even remove harmful tissue such as tumors. If you have a colonoscopy scheduled, you need to prepare your body for the exam so your doctor can get the best possible look at your colon. Here are some of the ways you’ll need to prepare.

Eat a Low-Fiber Diet

In the days leading up to your colonoscopy, you will need to eat a low-fiber diet. This will help your doctor get accurate results during your procedure. One day (24 hours) before the exam, you will only be able to consume clear liquids. Ask your doctor for specific guidelines on what you can and can’t consume in the days before your exam.

Take Your Laxatives

Taking a laxative the night before or morning of your procedure will help your body clean out the colon for accurate colonoscopy results. Your doctor might give you a prescription for laxatives or recommend an over-the-counter variety.

Make Other Adjustments

Your doctor might need you to stop taking certain medications or supplements in preparation for your colonoscopy, so make sure your doctor is aware of everything you’re currently taking. Discuss your specific health concerns with your doctor so they can create a pre-colonoscopy plan that will work best for your body.
