If you need a PEG tube, you might be worried about the placement surgery. While PEG tubes are helpful for a variety of conditions, patients might deal with some discomfort while recovering from surgery. Keep reading to learn what to expect after your procedure

What to Expect After Surgery

After your PEG tube placement, you might experience some stomach pain as well as tenderness at the site of your feeding tube. This is normal, and your doctor will be able to give you medication to manage the discomfort. Your doctor will tape your new PEG tube to the surface of your abdomen after surgery and will cover the site with gauze. You might notice some drainage or discharge from this site in the first few days after surgery.

During Your Recovery

As you recover from surgery, your doctor will monitor your PEG tube site for possible infections. You will also be given medications to help prevent infections. As you get stronger following your surgery, doctors will help you adjust to daily life with a PEG tube. Your medical team (and possibly a dietician) will meet with you to discuss diet and nutrition with a PEG tube. You will learn how to feed yourself using the tube and how to check for any complications.
