No one enjoys the feeling of nausea. Women who go through pregnancy and have to suffer through morning sickness understand how that constant feeling of sickness can ruin your day – day after day. People who have experienced the utter sickness that comes with the flu also understand. But there are some chronic conditions that can produce nausea and they aren’t all necessary due to sickness.

Surprising Causes of Nausea

Some activities and illnesses you expect to lead to nausea. Excessive drinking is an example of an activity that would cause it, but you may not expect to experience it with anxiety. Nausea is actually a common symptom associated with anxiety. For those people who experience chronic anxiety or have an anxiety disorder, nausea can be a side effect of the body’s reaction to the “fight-or-flight” mode.

Diabetes is a chronic condition which often requires medication and always requires monitoring. When it’s kept in check everything is okay, but when diabetic ketoacidosis occurs, the signs include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. When the body isn’t producing insulin and energy-starved cells begin to burn fat for fuel, elevated levels of Ketones build up in the urine and blood. This causes nausea as the person goes into ketoacidosis. When a person is unaware that he or she has diabetes or not aware of the warning signs and this happens, it could lead to coma or death.

Addison’s disease is another chronic condition that can cause nausea. This is an autoimmune disease in which the adrenal glands are not working properly. Classic symptoms of Addison’s are weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Adrenal deficiency can cause a person to go into shock and without treatment can be fatal.

Chronic heartburn is a hallmark of acid reflux disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Along with this, nausea can also be a symptom when stomach acid or the contents of one’s stomach churns back into the esophagus.

These are just a few of the many chronic conditions that can cause nausea. Gall bladder disease, the digestive disorder called gastroparesis, vasovagal syncope and even migraine headaches also can cause nausea. Finding the root cause of the symptom is important.
