Flatulence. Breaking wind. A fart. A toot. Passing gas. It’s known by many names and is the beginning of many jokes, but it’s not so funny if your excessive flatulence is causing you public embarrassment. It’s a natural by-product of our digestive system that we might prefer to try to keep to ourselves. That’s not always possible nor good for you, either.
Causes
Having excessive gas can happen from something as simple as swallowing extra air while talking, eating or drinking. Some foods are gassier than others which can also contribute. Medical conditions, like diabetes or thyroid dysfunction can lead to excessive flatulence, too. The issue is: how do you avoid the build up?
- Supplements
Enzyme supplements can help break down complex carbs in the small intestine instead of by bacteria in the large intestine that produces gas. Probiotics are helpful because they contain “good” bacteria that break down the gasses produced during digestion.
- Food
Beans, of course, are famous for their gas producing qualities, but other foods and beverages can be culprits, too.
- Cabbage, Brussel sprouts, broccoli
- All dairy
- Potatoes, pasta and corn
- Carbonated beverages and beer.
- Exercise
Yes! Staying active can reduce your excessive flatulence. Get some exercise, especially after a meal, to make your digestive system work for you.
- Digestive Issues
Your excessive flatulence could be telling you that there are other tummy troubles, like constipation. If bacteria sit in your colon for too long, they ferment, so clear up issues in this area to get some relief.
